It came through the systems last week, if you were asleep you may have missed it. Microsoft Released Windows Management Framework 5.0 to RTM status. The official announcement is here on the PowerShell Blog on Microsoft.
If you ALSO revisit the page you’ll notice the list of Operating Systems it can be deployed to seems to have expanded!
You can deploy this to all of the currently supported Operating Systems from Microsoft which are
- Windows 7
- Windows 8.1
- Server 2008 R2
- Server 2012
- Server 2012 R2
As it is already in Windows 10 and the Technical Preview versions of Server 2016 as a built in feature there is no need to add it in
What does this mean to you? Other than the obvious stuff such as more Cmdlets and modules targeted at improving the user experience you now gain now greatly desired changes.
Integration with central Repositories like PowerShellGallery.com for discovery of modules.
The ability to discover packages on Open Source respositories
Massive improvements to Desired State Configuration engine
The addition of Class creation to the Shell
I can barely do the desriptions to this new version justice, but just head over here on the Microsoft Download Center for Windows Management Framework 5.0 to check out the latest version and the enhancements is offers.
Best of all? It’s the gift you can give to yourself that costs nothing and keeps on giving .
